PERSPECTIVES IN SOCIAL JUSTICE

Social justice issues are complex and our responses run the gamut.  Confusion, frustration and compassion all play a part.  There are no easy answers to society’s problems, but our Church – both her shepherds and her flock – can offer tradition and experience to help bring the issues into focus.  Join us this September as we explore 3 topics in social justice:  the death penalty, immigration and the financial markets.  At each session, we will hear both Catholic teaching and first-hand accounts regarding these issues.  The presenters are generously offering their time to share what they’ve learned and experienced — not to persuade or debate, although there will be some time at the end of each session for questions from those in attendance.  We hope many of you can take advantage of these opportunities to learn more about these timely topics in a peaceful, prayerful atmosphere.

BIBLE STUDY           The Gospel of John and the Johannine Letters

This year we will be offering a 15-part study of the Gospel according to John and the Johannine letters, published by Little Rock Scripture Studies.  Written in a poetic and symbolic style, John’s Gospel and letters prayerfully reflect on Jesus and his eternal relationship to the Creator. This study invites you to meditate on God’s overwhelming love.  We will do the first 7 parts of the study in the fall, and finish the remaining 8 in the new year, before Lent begins.  Rest assured — you do not need to be a scripture scholar to participate in this study!  The materials we use are very thorough, and provide a great mix of educational and life-application content.

Two sessions will be available to choose from:

Tuesdays, September 7 —November 23 (excluding October 5, 19, 26, November 2, 9)
7:00 – 8:30 PM in the St. Joseph Parish Life & Education Center, room 218-Library

OR

Wednesdays, September 29 —November 10
10:30 AM – noon at Bethany Village

Both groups are open to Bethany residents and St. Joseph parishioners.  The fee for the study is $25, which includes both the fall and winter classes as well as the cost for materials.

INTRODUCTION TO SCRIPTURE

“Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.” Those are some strong words from Saint Jerome!   Put another way, we can say that those who seek to deepen their relationship with Jesus must immerse themselves in God’s Holy Word. This course addresses: how we come to know God through His Revelation in Sacred Scripture; the story of salvation history that is woven throughout Scripture; the relationship between Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium (teaching office of the Church); what it means to say that Scripture is both “inspired” and “inerrant”; keys to correctly approaching, understanding and interpreting Scripture; a brief overview of the individual books of both the Old and New Testaments; how to choose a Scripture translation and tips for personal Scripture study.   Credit towards catechetical certification will be given for this 4-part class.
