Religious Education
“The specific aim of catechesis is to develop, with God’s help, an as yet initial faith,
. . .and to advance in fullness and to nourish day by day the Christian life of the faithful, young and old.”
- Blessed John Paul II, On Catechesis In Our TimeSaint Joseph Religious Education Program (REP)
Saint Joseph’s Religious Education Program (REP) provides regular religion classes for children (grades 1 through 12) attending public schools. The program is sequential and texts follow a scope and sequence for grades 1 through 6. Also, Diocesan Curriculum Guidelines are followed. The two-year Confirmation Program, in grades 7 and 8, includes a study of Basic Beliefs and a thorough study of what it means to live as a Confirmed Catholic. Click here to see more on Confirmation preparation. All programs focus on prayer and Christian living.
Sacramental programs for Penance, Eucharist, and Confirmation require a two-year preparation period. Children are expected to attend formal instruction through all the grades. If children have missed grade levels, a make-up period may be necessary before being accepted into the sacramental program. Sacramental workshops for parents are an integral part of the program.
The Pre-school Program for 2-5 year-olds is scheduled for Sundays during the 9:30 Mass. The structure for 2 year-olds is informal. The 3, 4 and 5 year-old programs introduce children to Jesus and God through weekly handouts. There is also group singing, snacks, and prayer times.
Training is provided for parishioners who, as teachers, would like to share their faith with children.
A number of Saint Joseph parishioners volunteer in the program in varying capacities:
- Teachers
- Adult Aides
- Special Education Teachers
- Teen/Preteen Helpers
- Teachers for Hearing Impaired
- Substitute Teachers
- Music Teachers
